A list of all federal pensioners on the rolls was compiled by the Secretary of the Interior in 1883 and published in five large volumes. The persons listed were predominantly Civil War veterans or their widows, but there were also numerous entries for the War of 1812. While these volumes will be found in many large libraries, and are still in print in a reprint edition, they are very difficult to use because the data was arranged geographically rather than alphabetically.
