Devika, a highly intelligent, ambitious young woman enters politics, trying to emulate her aunt, the first female Prime Minister of Ceylon (Sri Lanka). At university she has a brief affair with a fellow student, Tony, a charming young man, but one who comes from the opposite end of the social spectrum. Tony goes to London to become a writer.
