A few general remarks on the nature of Demonology, and the original cause of the almost universal belief in communication betwixt mortals and beings of a power superior to themselves, and of a nature not to be comprehended by human organs, are a necessary introduction to the subject.

Peveril of the Peak is the longest novel by Sir Walter Scott. Along with Ivanhoe, Woodstock and Kenilworth, this is one of Scott's English novels, with the main action taking place around 1678. Julian Peveril, a Cavalier, is in love with Alice Bridgenorth, a Roundhead's daughter, but both he and his father are accused of involvement with the "Popish Plot" of 1678. Most of the story takes place in Derbyshire, London, and on the Isle of Man. The title refers to Peveril Castle in Castleton, Derbyshire.

Quentin Durward is one of the Waverley historical novels by Walter Scott. The story centres on the medieval rivalry between Louis XI of France and Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. Louis incites the citizens of Liege to revolt against Charles, and they seize and murder Charles's brother-in-law, Louis de Bourbon, Bishop of Liege, under the command of Louis's ally, William de la Marck, who was hoping to install his son in Louis de Bourbon's place. The novel is the real historical event which occurred in 1482."

Saint Ronan's Well is the only Waverley Novel by Sir Walter Scott written with a 19th-century setting. The novel tells us of the rivalry of two men; Valentine Bulmer, the Earl of Etherington, and his half-brother Francis Tyrrel. The rivalry is provoked by their shared desire to marry Miss Clara Mowbray, the sister of John, the laird of Saint Ronan's. Saint Ronan's Well is a real location, a spa at Innerleithen, a town near Peebles in southern Scotland.

Woodstock, or The Cavalier. A Tale of the Year Sixteen Hundred and Fifty-one is a historical novel by Walter Scott. Set just after the English Civil War, it was inspired by the legend of the Good Devil of Woodstock, which in 1649 supposedly tormented parliamentary commissioners who had taken possession of a royal residence at Woodstock, Oxfordshire. The story deals with the escape of Charles II in 1652, during the Commonwealth, and his final triumphant entry into London on 29 May 1660.

Anne of Geierstein is the last of the Waverley novels by Sir Walter Scott. The novel is set in Central Europe, mainly in Switzerland, shortly after the Yorkist victory at the Battle of Tewkesbury, covering the period of the Swiss involvement in the Burgundian Wars. Walter Scott's novel The Black Dwarf is the first in the series of in Tales of My Landlord. The story is set just after the Union of Scotland and England 1707, in the Liddesdale hills of the Scottish Borders, familiar to Scott from his work collecting ballads for The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border. Old Mortality is a novel by Sir Walter Scott set in the period of 1679 to 1689 in south west Scotland. Along with The Black Dwarf if forms the 1st series of Scott's Tales of My Landlord. The two novels were published together in 1816. It is considered by many critics be one of Scott's best novels.
