When Mavis Enderby's husband dies suddenly, she is finally allowed the freedom to pursue her own life and interests. As she begins to explore new creative vistas, it is announced that much of the rail network in her home county of Lincolnshire is to close. She becomes entangled in the campaign to save it, and with local stationmaster Newton St Loe.
