These sermons were compiled by Professor J. W. Crowder, of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and his arrangement of them has been left undisturbed. He has been of incalculable help to me in this and in much other service, I have rendered in the preparation of the Carroll material. It was with a trembling hand and an inexpressible humility of spirit that I edited these sermons. That they are needed; that they will help every soul who reads them; that they will live to bless our world long after all, who have had any part in them have passed into rest, and that they will stimulate...

And now, dear brethren and sisters, the hour has come for you to be baptized. As you have gladly received His word, I would have you joyfully obey His command. I never shall forget the day I was baptized. Oh, dear friends, if you could ever know (God grant you may never know it experimentally) the horrors of hell through which I passed in my infidelity, then you might know the joy of my conversion, when I saw my Redeemer, when I fell at His feet and said in my heart: "Lord, tell me what to do, I'll do it without a question." So when I took His Book and read about baptism I went to the church...

The reader will form his own conclusions of the power and sweep of Carroll's great messages. Here they are, and they tell their own story. He was a man after God's own heart, who lived a lofty and conquering life. My fixed conviction is that these messages and his other works will live long after all of those who had part in their preparation and all of this generation who are now privileged to peruse them have passed into rest. My faith is the faith of a simple, plain Baptist. I accepted from my father and Dr. Carroll the verbal inspiration of the Bible, the deity of Jesus Christ, His perfect humanity, His atoning death, His bodily resurrection, His second coming. All my studies since have confirmed the simple faith I received from them. I greatly joy in the publication of this volume of Dr. Carroll's sermons on the inspiration of the Bible. His interpretative authority has great weight with me, but I have never had occasion to depart from his teachings on these great themes. The logic, piling Scripture upon...

At the time of its publication this set was acclaimed to constitute "the greatest commentary on the English Bible ever published" (Baptist and Reflector). It remains to this day a reliable guide to a thorough understanding of the Scriptures. This is an excellent set for the preacher who aspires to be true to the Word and who wishes to enrich his preaching ministry. It is an invaluable aid for the teacher who seeks to guide his class to a deeper knowledge and appreciation of God's Revelation to us. It is an ideal set for any student of the Bible who desires to hear what God has to say to him....

Our Lord and the New Testament writers neither coined this word nor employed it in any unusual sense. Before their time it was in common use, of well understood signification, and subject like any other word to varied employment, according to the established laws of language. That is, it might be used abstractly, or generically, or particularly, or prospectively, without losing its essential meaning. To simplify and shorten the work before us, we need not leave the New Testament to find examples of its classic or Septuagint use. Fair examples of both are in the list of New Testament passages...
