Four short stories The deadly game: a police inspector investigates the disappearance of a girl who was walking along a beach. He enquires about certain local people. His hours of danger: a boy becomes involved with a robbery and is taken hostage. Their financial horror: a young couple go to desperate lengths to solve their financial problems and are shocked by what they get themselves into. Hellish hours: a couple who put out a contract on three youngsters whom they believe got to know about their illegal activities and it all goes disastrously wrong.

A short story about a nun, who after the war, visits the commandant of the camp where she was imprisoned. The story includes a song "Two babes were born"; and "they shall not grow old" (the verse from the poem "For the fallen" by Laurence Binyon) set to a tune.
