The report details how NHTSA produces these lives saved estimates for seat belts and frontal air bags. The methodology is described in detail, including the use of effectiveness ratings for seat belts and frontal air bags. Seat belt effectiveness ratings vary according to the seat belt type (i.e., 3-point belt versus 2-point lap belt), vehicle type, occupant seating position, and occupant age. Frontal air bag effectiveness ratings are consistent for all passenger vehicles. The interactions of the effectiveness of seat belts and the effectiveness of frontal air bags are discussed in this...

This report examined issues related to the ejection status of passenger vehicle occupants in fatal crashes. The tables are produced from data from the national highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis report Ing System (FARS) for the 5-year period from 2003 through 2007. The relationship between ejection status and the following factors are included in the report: Occupant restraint use, occupant injury severity, vehicle model year, speed limit at the location of the crash, rollover status, vehicle type, occupant age, occupant seat position, initial impact point, and number...

Run-Off-Road crashes cause a large proportion of fatalities and serious injuries to the vehicle occupants. In this study, fatal crashes from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System for passenger vehicles (passenger cars and LTVs) during the period 1991 to 2007 wre used to identify the roadway- (e.g., rural/urban nature and curve existence), driver- (e.g., age, gender, drowsy, and alcohol use), environmental- (e.g., weather, lighting condition), and vehicle-related factors (e.g., speeding) associated with the fatal single vehicle run-off-road crashes.

This report describes the current efforts States are undertaking to promote motorcycle safety, drawing on a survey received from State Highway Safety Offices (SHSOs) and State motorcycle safety administrators (SMSAs) in 45 States. The results presented in this report provide a picture of recent accomplishments made by States related to motorcycle safety. The data presented is based on State-level, self-reported information.

The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's census of motor vehicle crash fatalities in the United States and its territories. This paper seeks to explain the implementation of the re-coding process, in which previously entered cases were sampled and re-coded by select, experienced FARS analysts to check the accuracy and performance of the original analysts. The goal of the re-coding process is to enhance the quality control process to maintain accurate, complete, and timely FARS data.

The report includes many estimates of the fatality- or injury-risk increase for aging a year, or the risk for a female relative to a male of the same age, given similar physical insults: by vehicle type, model year, seat position, types of occupant protection available, belt use, impact location, body region of the injury, or severity (AIS) of the injury. In addition, for the major occupant protection technologies - seat belts, air bags, and energy-absorbing materials - analysis methods of past NHTSA evaluations will show if fatality-reducing effectiveness is significantly different for...
