R J's Gifts is a multifaceted story with as many convolutions as is depicted by the coral vine on the book cover. It is one book with two distinct plots, one of which could stand on its own (in italics) and the other (standard print) needing the first for support, but in the end one realizes the book involves three separate love stories. The author invites the reader to be surprised, to anticipate, to worry, to grieve, to become frustrated, to lose hope, to regain hope, to be patient, to survive, and to be happy as the story unfolds. Whether one is hiking the trails or observing the world from a high vantage point, the feeling is one of wonder, splendor, and endearment. With each step upward, we realize we are coming closer to the heavens above. It makes us stop and think about how big the universe is, and how small we are in comparison. At the same time, we can feel a sense of importance in that we are a vital part of our world, and that we have the capability of appreciating all that is around us.
