David Bonner is a sixteen year old student in Paris. A road accident sees him admitted to hospital and he is unable to get away before the arrival of the victorious Germans. He has by then lost contact with his French army officer father and has no idea whether he is still alive or dead. His mother is in England, David has no ID papers and the Gestapo are now asking questions about him. He falls in with the Resistance and meets Marie, a beautiful French girl his own age. She joins him and his friend Henri in a dangerous attempt to escape by road and finally in a desperate attempt to reach...

David Bonner escaped from Nazi occupied France but now he returns as a newly qualified doctor conscripted into the British Army. He looks up old acquaintances but he and his friend Henri pick up the trail of an old enemy and vow to bring him to summary justice even if this conflicts with David's newly sworn Hippocratic oath.
