The story bespeaks her life from infancy to womanhood and gives a detailed researched study of former India and the status of women and the poor. It not only is a regular criticism of the society but also the way of perceiving religion and how very often religion has simply been used by people in society for seeking their own interests and the novel relates to the biases of religion as perceived by the present generation, even today.
