The Sugar mill effluent was collected in the present research and used for the cultivation of Spirulina platensis. The physico-chemical characteristics of the Sugar mill effluent were analyzed. The Blue Green Algae Spirulina platensis was cultivated in conical flask containing Zarrouks medium with three different concentrations of Sugar mill effluent (50 ml, 75 ml and 100 ml/lt). In the present study, a fungal strain was isolated from tannery effluent which showed the chromium resistant activity and was identified as Penicillium chrysogenum and Aspergillus niger. Penicillium chrysogenum showed very high level chromium resistance of 800 ug/ml by Agar dilution method when compared to Aspergillus niger. The minimal inhibitory concentration of chromium was found to be 512 ug/ml of potassium dichromate in Sabouraud's dextrose broth medium.
