With insight and hindsight the author presents a renewed vision of the Carmelite tradition of prayer and spirituality. This tradition presents an invitation to contemplation as the real conclusion of Christian maturity for all. Such a pastoral vision for parishes will raise the bar for all the members. The change means a progression in expectations for spiritual growth for each parishioner. The author focuses on one classic in the tradition, "The Interior Castle" of St. Teresa of Avila. Two Carmelite priests from Germany came to the United States of America during its Civil War to plant their religious Order on the North American continent. This book records the early years of struggle to build a foundation upon which a province could be built. By 1900, what had started as the dream of two pioneering Carmelites to found the Order in America had become the lived vision of 35 priests, 21 brothers, 20 clerics, 2 novices and 10 scholastics. Today the province numbers 180 members with foundations in five countries.

Among all the writings of St. Teresa of Avila, the Interior Castle is the work which is most appropriate for the study of the ascetical and mystical life. Chronologically it is her last book and it shows the saint's spiritual maturity. She takes up the rich treasury of experiences which she relates in the book of her Life, the Way of Perfection and also in the Spiritual Testimonies (or the Favors Received from God) and she presents these in a less personal and descriptive form. By following her counsels in this book, Fr. Otger Steggink opens up for us the path of contemplation as understood...

The relationship of St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross to their brothers and sisters in the Carmelite Order and the impact these two mystics had upon the Order has been largely ignored. This current work, by noted Carmelite historian, Fr. Pablo Maria Garrido, is a significant contribution towards bridging that gap. The book explores the testimony of various members of the Carmelite Order in which both saints began their religious life and under whose obedience they both died.

When Gods Die is a study that offers a unique insight for adult Christians seeking more substance in their spirituality. It provides an excellent summary of the major writings of St. John of the Cross: The Ascent of Mount Carmel, The Dark Night, The Spiritual Canticle, and The Living Flame of Love.
