In the field of machine tools the considerable progress which has taken place in the last two decades, has been due to a large extent to the co-opera tion between teaching, research and industry. The paper describes how this co-operation, extending far beyond national boundaries, has influenced design fundamentals as well as design practice for metal cutting machine tools, and how this has contributed to the develop ment of machines which show better quantitative and qualitative perfor mance with higher technical and economic efficiency.
