This little book, the substance of which has, in part, appeared previously, and in other forms, often fragmentary, is an attempt to supply a felt need and answer these inquiries. Herein we briefly trace the story of the whole movement and of the so- called "Keswick Convention" in England, from its beginnings, through the more than quarter of a century of its annual recurrence, and seek to show what are the truths, principles, and practices for which "Keswick' stands. A. T. P.

The genesis of this book is very simple. Having occasion to prepare a special address on "Prayer," it occurred to me to collate and compare all the words spoken by our Lord himself upon the great theme, as it had often been found that His teachings upon any given subject, when so combined, constitute a consistent and harmonious whole-a body of doctrine, singularly comprehensive, and symmetrically complete.

Goethe says, that before a reader complains of obscurity in an author, he should examine whether he himself is "clear within; in the twilight a very plain writing is illegible." "The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God, neither can he know them because they are spiritually discerned." No amount of light on the pages will compensate for a blind eye. "If the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness " The Bible should be taken up with the prayer, "Open Thou mine eyes, that I may beheld wondrous things out of Thy law."

THE ANNALS, both of ancient Israel and of the modern Church, record mingled success and failure. Our instincts tell us that success must be the consequence and crown of conformity to the pattern showed us in the mount; and failure, the result of departure from the divine standard. Some displacing of the pure and perfect type of doctrine and method, prescribed in the Word of GOD, may account for the withholding of blessing, and for defeat and disaster in our missionary work. We have need, perhaps, to begin again, and lay anew the basis of missionary enterprise; or, if we find the former...

This book aspires to no pre-eminence as furnishing homiletic models. Twelve sermons are here put in print, which were preached in the Metropolitan Tabernacle, London, in the Autumn of 1891, while Pastor C. H. Spurgeon was seeking recovered health at Mentone. They were never written, even in part, and are reproduced almost verbatim. If any interest invests them, it is almost wholly circumstantial, owing to the unique conditions under which they were spoken. Many and marked as are their defects, it pleased God, in a remarkable degree, to use them both to convert sinners and confirm saints....
