Florence Orville, once the top agent for the Blanchstone Agengy, and undone by her exposition as a Black woman passing for white, fluctuates between reality and fantasy as she seeks refuge in adventures in the oak tree in her backyard, tormented by her past and an Afrocentric vagabond. A chance encounter with a dark-skinned and seemingly innocent artisan forces her outside of her self-absorption and into an examination and rediscovery of her own identity and nature.
