Sheriff Cyrus Ocklund wakes up one morning to find that his Deputy has been strangled to death. He hires a Ute Indian to help him find the killer and do other duties in the small, quiet town of High Bench, Utah Territory. A gang of outlaws blows up the bank and takes off with the money. The Sheriff rounds up a posse and follows the trail of the outlaws. A woman posse member is taken captive, further aggravating the situation, and the small posse is not large enough to take on the thieves. An exciting story of cat and mouse to the final shootout along the Green River.

A collection of short stories based on tales heard as the author was growing up in the small town of Altonah, Utah, especially those of Butch Cassidy and his gang. Others are purely from the author's imagination. Traveling to the Rockies in 1847 is true, but written to be comical with a little satire.

In Utah Territory, a young Indian, Bobby Chase-the-Lord, leaves Dry Creek to start his own church but is sidetracked by murder, theft, a girl, and his partner's (Kid Ferry's) misdeeds. They become lawmen in Idle Springs and have to split up to avoid the law. Bobby stays a lawman and Kid hits the owl hoot trail with the Castanat gang. They know they will have to face each other some time in a showdown.
