The River Ganga is the largest river basin in the Indian subcontinent. It is the life line of the riparian population. The Ganga originates in the Garhwal Himalayas (30 0 55 N, 70 0 7 E) from the Gaumukh ice-cave of the Gangotri glacier under the name of Bhagirathi at an elevation of 4,100 m above msl. After travelling of total length of 2700 km the river ends in Bay of Bengal at Ganga Sagar. It harvours a vast Ichthyofaunal diversity. In Present study 106 Fish species were recorded which indicates rich source of fish and fisheries in the stretch of the river Ganga."
