After being driven from tent camping by mobile campers with gasoline generators, the Mercer family bought acreage on Great North Mountain near Winchester, VA and built a cabin. The property once the hunting grounds of the Shawnee Indians became their refuge where they might commune with nature and rejuvenate their inner sense of selfsufficiency in the solitude of a mountaintop site.
