A sojourn in anthropology... Matrimony is so much a part of our lives that few pause to wonder about how it began, or why, or when. In the early days of anthropology these were very hot questions, resulting in a welter of theories, often contradicting one another. By the early 20th century, however, the critics found serious flaws in all of the old theories, and decided that the question of the origin of matrimony was unsolvable. More recently, those who call themselves "evolutionary psychologists" (or "sociobiologists") have taken up the issue anew, unencumbered by knowledge of anthropology....
