After the accidental discovery of a hidden diary, a young girl, originally considered a runaway, now appears to be a murder victim. The girl's stepfather is the primary suspect, and as Detective Dan Lawson uncovers the facts, he and his wife Sally are drawn into an expanding investigation with multiple murders, missing bodies, and vicious attacks on their own lives.

Young women are being killed in a brutal fashion. The number fourteen has been cut into the foreheads of each mutilated victim. The pressure is building on the police and FBI to find the serial killer before more women die; but Detective Dan Lawson, the lead investigator on the case, is struggling to find any clue or the meaning of the number fourteen.
