Der funfte Band der Briefe an Pestalozzi umfasst die Zeit von August 1817 bis 1820: eine Zeit, die von grassierender Armut gepragt war, aber auch vom Durchbruch der Restauration vor allem in Preussen. Diese wirtschaftlich, politisch und personlich turbulenten Ereignisse spiegeln sich auch in der Korrespondenz Pestalozzis wider. Nach vielen erfolglosen Versuchen konnte Pestalozzi wieder eine Armenanstalt - in Yverdons Vorort Clindy - eroffnen, und es begann eine intensive Rezeption seiner Methode in England und Irland.
