Shipboard Electrical system design and development requirements are fundamentally different from the Utility based power generation and distribution requirements. Electrical engineers who are engaged in shipbuilding must understand various design elements to build safe and energy efficient power distribution systems as well as understanding the national and international design rules and regulations. This book covers all the relevant regulations in building shipboard which include commercial ships, naval ships and offshore floating platforms. In recent years, offshore floating platforms...

This book investigates the problems presented by variable frequency drives (VFDs) as they are applied in shipboard power generation and distribution system design. VFDs with configurations such as six pulse drive, 12 pulse drive, 18 pulse drive, active front end, pulse width modulation and many others generate many different levels of harmonics. These harmonics are often much higher than the regulations allow. The author provides multiple techniques for surmounting these difficulties and providing ships with efficient energy that minimizes mechanical and electrical stress.
