Tanneries are the oldest industries in Bangladesh of which 95 percent are concentrated in Hazaribagh area of Dhaka city. All the industries follow both manual and mechanical processing technique. Due to semi-mechanized processing technique and improper waste management huge polluting substances are discharged by the tannery units to the Hazaribagh area as well as to the Buriganga River without treatment.
