The only house that Benjamin Franklin ever owned stood in an airy courtyard off Market Street in Philadelphia. He once called it "a good House contrived to my Mind," but in reality it belonged as much to his family as it did to him, who spent so much time abroad. This volume is the brief story of the house and family that lived there. It is also the story of its sad destruction and of the fitting memorial raised on the original site.

During the fiscal year 1902-3 the work of the Geological Survey, in geology, paleontology, geography, topography, forestry, chemistry, physics, hydrography, reclamation of arid lands, statistics of mining and mineral resources, etc, etc., was carried forward on the basis established in former years and in accordance with the plan of operations approved by the Secretary of the Interior.

This paper is devoted to a discussion of the auriferous gravels of the southern and northwestern parts of Seward Peninsula. Its purpose is to meet the wants of the miner and prospector by presenting the results of the reconnaissance surveys made from 1899 to 1903, so far as they bear on the distribution and origin of the placer gold. As a necessary preliminary the geology of the peninsula will be presented in outline, but as this volume must be kept to a reasonable size, much matter not directly pertinent to the discussion of the mineral wealth will perforce have to be omitted.
