VA operates about 1,000 medical facilities, such as hospitals and outpatient clinics, that provide services to more than 6 million patients annually, The operation and maintenance of its facilities, including NRM, is funded from VA's Medical Facilities appropriations account, one of three accounts through which Congress provides resources for VA health care services.

The U.S. government has imposed numerous sanctions targeting Iran since 1987, in part to deter Iran from supporting terrorism and developing its nuclear program. U.S. laws and executive orders have established a U.S. trade and investment ban targeting Iran, have been used to impose sanctions against foreign entities that support Iranian terrorist organizations or proliferation activities, and have imposed financial sanctions targeting Iran.

DOD has invested heavily in its logistics operations, estimating that its overall spending on logistics- including supply chain management, was more that $171 billion in fiscal year 2011. GAO has previously reported that one of the most complex and vital tasks facing DOD is managing its supply chain to effectively and efficiently provide military supplies.

Within DOJ, USMS, DEA, and the FBI own, lease, and operate government aircraft primarily to accomplish and provide support for their various mission operations, such as transporting prisoners; preventing illicit drug trafficking into and within the United States; and conducting a variety of counter terrorism, intelligence, and criminal surveillance activities. For example, USMS operates 12 aircraft primarily for air surveillance and prisoner transport.

The AQI program provides for inspections of imported agricultural goods, products, passenger baggage, and vehicles, including commercial aircraft, ships, trucks, and rail cars, to prevent the introduction of harmful agricultural pests and diseases. CBP has responsibility for inspection activities at ports of entry.

Treatment options for individuals with ESRD include kidney transplants or maintenance dialysis. Kidney transplants are not a practical option on a wide scale, as suitable donated organs are scarce. Consequently, dialysis is the treatment used by most individuals with ESRD. Hemodialysis, the most common form of dialysis, is generally administered three times a week at facilities that provide these services. During hemodialysis, a machine pumps blood through an artificial kidney and returns the cleansed blood to the body.

Congress established clear time frames in the BRAC statute for many of the milestones involved with base closures and realignments, and BRAC 2005 took 10 years from authorization to completion. Congress authorized the BRAC 2005 round in 2001. DOD then established its own internal requirements, expressed the goals of the BRAC round, and spent about 2 years collecting data and developing a list of proposed base realignment and closure actions to submit to the independent Commission for review.

Threats to systems supporting critical infrastructure and federal information systems are evolving and growing. Advanced persistent threats-where adversaries possess sophisticated levels of expertise and significant resources to pursue their objectives repeatedly over an extended period of time-pose increasing risks. In 2009, the President declared the cyber threat to be one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation" and stated that "America's economic prosperity in the 21st century will depend on cybersecurity."

Established as a national program in the mid 1970s,7 WIC is designed to improve the health and nutritional well-being of pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and young children by providing nutritious supplemental foods, nutrition education, and referrals to health and social service programs. Research has shown that WIC helps to improve birth and dietary outcomes and contain health care costs, and USDA considers WIC to be one of the nation's most successful and cost-effective nutrition intervention programs.
