Twenty five numbers of crabs (P. sanguinolentus) were collected from Parangipettai fish market. Paenibacillus sp were isolated from the gut of crabs. Then the isolated colonies were characterized for phenotypic and biochemical properties for identification. Out of twenty five crabs, twenty one showed the presence of E.coli while only four crabs showed the presence of Paenibacillus sp. The culture of shrimps received maximum importance due to its unique taste, high nutritive value and persistent demand in the world market. In recent years, the diseases of shrimp hindered the development of shrimp culture. In the present study an attempt has been made to culture the giant tiger shrimp, P.monodon in 12 ponds each with 0.6ha. The use of probiotic bacteria in aquaculture has tremendous scope and the study of the application of probiotics in aquaculture has a glorious future.

The nutritional status of the M. idella idella is not inferior to already studied commercially important Palaemonid prawns. The survival rate of seeds is also more than 70%. The seed production technology followed in the present study is very simple and highly suitable for small scale farmers. So it is suggested that M. idella idella will be a best alternative species for the bigger sized prawns (M. rosenbergii and M. malcomsoni).

The aquaculture industry of the world has been facing serious problem due to microbial diseases. The present study was carried out to know the gut microflora of two commercially important crabs, P. pelagicus and P. sanguinolentus for a period of one year from December 2008 to November 2009. The cosumers are eating these crabs without knowing the bacerial contamination. So in this study an attempt wss made to inventigate the bacteriel contamination of crabs in different localities. Reliable taxonomy is essential to the repeatability of most biological research. Advances in data of the biology and ecology of many little known groups, including brachyuran crabs, are critically constrained by their underdeveloped taxonomy. Identification is very important for research and farming of any aquatic animals and crabs are no exception.

Among the edible marine crustaceans of India, crabs ranks third by virtue of their importance as an esteemed gourmet and the value of fishery they support. Hatchery technology is available for shrimps and prawns. But commercial hatchery is right now not available for crabs in general and swimming crabs in particular. In this book fishery of ovigerous crabs, embryonic development, salinity requirement for larval rearing and seed production technology is detailed for the benefit of scientists and farmers.
