A young adult novel set in the American South following the Civil War. Thirteen-year-old Skeeter Tates has clashed with his step-father one too many times, so Skeeter with best pal Ben run away from home, heading for Texas. They meet up with April, a teenager herself, who befriends the boys and joins them in their escape and adventures.
