Hans Jacobsen, my father, was born at the end of the 19th century in the Faroe Islands - eighteen small, rocky islands just below the Arctic Circle, north-west of the British Isles. He started sailing full time at age 14 or 15, travelling all around the world before finally settling in San Francisco fifteen years later. In 1916, at age 20, he made his last visit to his homeland.
