In 1996, Camosun College celebrated its 25th Anniversary. There were 27 instructors who had started with College in 1971 who were still teaching on the anniversary. I personally found this of interest, perhaps because of my highly variable track record of employment. I arranged appointments with the instructors during the Christmas break and took holidays at that time. In visiting each instructor, I tried to find two locations; office and lab by example. I had photographed Frank Gurney, engraver, forty years ago while a student in photography school. He surfaced again in a different community nearby as the person selected to engrave replicas of the Grey Cup, for the Canadian Football League. I compiled a mock up for the book from my old negatives. My transition from highly stylized figurative paintings to abstraction had its roots in a casual conversation at Pharos Pizza, near where I lived in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada around 1980. The point of the conversation was painting products and I learned about an industrial paint product used in extreme conditions, such as high wear and exposure to acids and bases. One if its attributes was its clarity, or lack of the milkiness common with layers of the clear acrylics of that time.
