Historical Puerto de Luna was founded in the mid-1860's in the Pecos River valley of New Mexico. Its glory days were in the 1880's when the famous outlaw, Billy the Kid, sometimes visited the area. The 1890's saw it become the county seat of the newly created Guadalupe County. After the railroad bypassed it in favor of Santa Rosa in 1901 Puerto de Luna began a steady decline and eventually lost its status as county seat.
