This book examines vernacular literary texts of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Age from a cultural studies perspective, focusing on the context of their origin and effect, their media preconditions, their concepts of cultural systems and the discussion and transformation of social norms. A wide spectrum of texts is covered from the 12th to the 16th centuries including the heroic epic, novellas, religious drama, satire and the encyclopedia. The starting point and objective of this book are to understand the literary text as a medium to reflect cultural configurations.

The volume assembles all the studies on Minnesang published so far by Jan-Dirk Muuuml;ller. Their common denominator is the combination of literary theory and the historical perspective on Minnesang, with constant reference to specific examples. The impulses emanating from New Philology prove to have a genuine bearing on Minnesang by virtue of the emphasis on the intrinsic logic of different versions. Eine eigentumliche Auffassung von Herrschaftszeichen und Legitimitat zeigen zwei Kommentare Walthers von der Vogelweide zur doppelten deutschen Konigswahl 1198, in denen er fur den Thronbewerber Philipp von Schwaben wirbt. Dies begrundet er nicht mit rechtlichen Abstraktionen, sondern mit Philipps Erscheinungsbild. Strukturen dieses Denkens finden sich neben der Politik auch in der feudalen Laiengesellschaft und der auf sie bezogenen Literatur.

"Auffuhrung" und "Schrift" sind polare Gegensatze, deren Verhaltnis und Wechselwirkungen an Texten und kulturellen Phanomenen aus dem 12. und 18. Jahrhundert beschrieben werden.
