After his release, his adventures on the open sea continue until his unlikely, life-changing encounter with God which leads to the founding of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, a worldwide Protestant Christian denomination which today reports over 15 million baptized members with congregations in 202 countries.

Joseph Bates was born in 1792 in Rochester, Massachusetts. At the age of fifteen, he accepted a job as a cabin boy aboard the Fanny, sailing from New York City to London. Thus began his career on the high seas, which culminated in Joseph becoming a respected ship captain.
