The photobleaching of methylene blue with reducing sugars in 50% aqueous methanol using acetate buffer has been investigated with steady - illumination of monochromatic radiations of 661 nm on specially designed optical bench in a dark room. The dye reduction processes were studied at various parameters i) concentrations of dye, ii) concentrations of reductants such as Galactose, D-Mannose, D-Ribose, Maltose and Lactose, iii) acidity Ho of reaction solution iv) temperature as a function of quantum yield . Hammett acidity function Ho was used to determine acidity of the reaction solution. The...

The oxidation of sugars was monitored spectrophotometrically by potassium permanganate in acidic medium at max 545 nm. Oxidation products were identified as arabinonic and formic acid and the respective acids of sugars. These products may be due to the generation of two oxidative species of Potassium Permanganate in acidic medium. Respective acids of sugar by the generation of reactive oxygen species in presence of an acid and arabinonic and formic acids due to the breakage of C__C bond by the reactive species of Permanganate ion. Slow reaction of lactose was accelerated by catalyzing it with...
