This work covers the concept of evolved 3G networks (primarily 3GPP SAE/LTE, with cross references to CDMA2000 & TISPAN NGN/NGMN) from the 'inside' of standardization. The readers understanding of the resulting design is aided by presenting & discussing the relevant history, detours & the alternatives that were not pursued.
