Suitable for soprano soloist, mixed choir, and small orchestra or chamber ensemble. The texts (in Latin and English) are from the Missa pro Defunctis, the Book of Common Prayer, and the Psalms. It contains seven sections which form an arch-like meditation on the themes of life and death.

50 carols for sopranos and altos (suitable for boys', girls', or women's choirs). It contains mostly simple arrangements of the best-loved carols, some less well-known ones, and four original pieces by Britten (2), Rutter, and Hadley. Most of the Christmas hymns are presented in two versions; for choirs only, unaccompanied, and for choir and audience/congregation, with accompaniment.

The instrumentation is the same as Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.5. The Suite is made up of six movements ranging from a Bach-like Aria' to a 'Richard Rodgers-style Waltz'. Rutter's own style comes forth most strongly in the final Rondeau with its characteristically forward-driving rhythms and beautiful melodic lines. Evoking an 'antique' spirit, each movement is based on a Baroque or Classical style.
