Les "avatars" relates ici relevent d'un genre qu'on pourrait qualifier de "metaphysique-fiction." A l'arriere-plan de chaque recit se profile en effet le postulat metaphysique, certes discutable mais non exclu par certaines spiritualites, selon lequel l'ame est une realite independante du corps... Dans le present contexte, l'ame du heros central peregrine aux quatre coins du Possible et s'incarne, bon an mal an, ici ou la, au hasard de sites corporels et cadres de vie trouves vacants. Plus serieusement, ces quatre recits sont l'occasion pour le heros (i.e. pour l'auteur) d'examiner et decrire...

"Lettres mortes" sont celles que l'on ecrit, mais que l'on n'envoie pas; plus mortes encore, celles que l'on a en tete et que l'on n'ecrit pas... Les bouts de lettres constituant l'ossature du present recit relevent des deux categories: en parties ecrites, elles ne seront jamais achevees, ni a fortiori envoyees; ce sont en quelque sorte des lettres "mort-nees..". La realite fuyante qu'elles tentent d'evoquer - "le temps qui passe"- paralyse au bout de quelques lignes la plume de l'epistolier, lequel n'en continue pas moins le fil de son recit et de ses reflexions, parallelement a ce fleuve...
