This collection of Western works on the Japanese language represents the second burst of activity in this area, after the Jesuits had produced a variety of by now well-known works around the turn of the 16th- and 17th-centuries. Their efforts, however, were virtually wiped out as a result of the persecution of things Christian in Japan and only began to be rediscovered towards the end of the 19th century.
