This guide discusses the basic provisions of the conformity process, including the following: (1) A description of actions subject to conformity; (2) Frequency of conformity determinations; (3) Key components of a conformity determination; (4) Consequences of a failure to make a conformity determination; and (5) Roles and responsibilities of public agency staff, management, policy officials, and decision makers in the conformity process.

In February 2008, the Volpe Center performed acoustic measurements of ten snowcoaches and six snowmobiles. These measurements were made with two primary objectives: (1) help determine what testing protocols should be used to determine if snowcoaches meet the sound level BAT and; (2) determine which snowcoaches currently operating in the parks meet the sound level BAT standards. The Volpe Study resulted in a number of recommended improvements to the procedures in SAE J116114.

This report assesses the prospects for enhanced alternative transportation services and infrastructure at the National Park Service unit of the Fire Island National Seashore. The park staff believes that enhancement of alternative transportation services can help facilitate access to the resources of Fire Island, and support the needs of year-round residents, seasonal renters, and day visitors. The assessment is based upon a thorough survey of existing services, a market survey, and projections for modest visitation growth.
