Examining the economic survival strategies of rural South Africans, this study sheds light on their experiences in respect to four areas of activity: employment in commercial agriculture, small-scale agriculture, non-farm micro-enterprise, and participation in government projects. Four provincial case studies--Limpopo, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal--form the basis of the report, which looks at the challenges facing public policies that address poverty.
