"I finally awoke. I was very weak and incoherent. I was trying to see what was happening around me. As I picked up my head, I could see my whole body was twisted and folded inside a suitcase. I could not feel anything, and my head was hanging outside the suitcase on a sidewalk outside an old building. I saw Carlos, my husband, zip up the suitcase, leaving just my head out; and a nurse came out of the building to help him carry the suitcase inside. I tried to talk, yell, scream, but nothing came out of my mouth." Being one of seven people in the world with a severe case of Guillain-Barre...

This thesis examines the Z box contribution to the weak charge of the proton. Here, by combining recent parity-violating electron-deuteron scattering data with our current understanding of parton distribution functions, the author shows that one can limit this model dependence. The resulting construction is a robust model of the and Z structure functions that can also be used to study a variety of low-energy phenomena. Two such cases are discussed in this work, namely, the nucleon s electromagnetic polarizabilities and quark-hadron duality.
By using phenomenological information to...
