Modern acoustic instruments, sophisticated displays and microprocessor-based signal processing are in constant use throughout the world to map the distribution of fish, estimate biomass, locate fish shoals, monitor fish movement and study fish behaviour. The use of underwater sound in this way is hence an extremely important tool for the study of fish for research purposes and in commercial fisheries.
