This volume provides an academic study of spiritual and theological themes and frameworks within the four case-studies selected, organized thematically and comparatively. It relates the spiritualities expressed in the literary and visual texts studied to contemporary analyses of the Western spiritual condition. Texts studied are: the Harry Potter series, His dark materials, Tales from Earthsea, and Buffy the vampire slayer.

This collection explores the question of whether it is possible to re-concieve the catagory of trancendence from a feminist perspective. The contributors use the concept of transcendence to approach questions relating to the body, desire, and subjectivity, while offering a response to secular relativism.
