Based on 19th Century travelogues and surveys, archaeological archives and the author's own excavations (described in a catalogue of 3,115 Byzantine sites) this massive study explores the economic and demographic explosion in 4th-6th Century AD Palestine. Two themes come through the work; the struggle for religious supremacy and the underlying causes of the fall of Byzantine civilisation (technological stagnation, poor diet, famines and disease).
