Andy Zaller's Dancers Series of photographic images of professional dancers and dance students provided the conceptual and artistic framework for this publication. He considers dancing to be the culmination of the integration of all aspects of the arts, including the visual arts. The basic principles of design and the elements of art such as rhythm, contrast, emphasis, color and space are captured by the various movements and physical appearance of dancers, whether they are simply doing warm-up exercises in the studio or engaging in actual performances on the stage.

This series of landscapes was based on my desire to combine the natural world with my interpretations of that world. Art is a juxtaposition of the real and the imaginary. As we "see" the world, we have opportunities to use our creative abilities to transform that world into unique works of art. The images in this series were photographs I took over a period of time in various locations including Germany, Boston, Salem, Norway, Italy, Scotland, England, Chicago, New York, Rhode Island, Kansas, and Tulsa. The photographs were manipulated for special expressive effects.

This book is dedicated to the proposition that dance incorporates the elements and principles of the visual arts. Through various movements, dancers exhibit rhythm, movement, balance, contrast, line, color, texture, shape and form. Whether it is a professional ballerina performing on stage or in rehearsal, or students learning basic steps or people whose movements show expressive content, the Invitation to Dance book is a continuation of my artistic interpretive exploration of dance and dancers. The photographic images range from representational to highly abstract.
