This book analyses not only Arctic organization and background but also the way in which current regional development draws upon the extensive history of polar research and exploration. The book defines the discourse of the Arctic as it is manifested in the political region-building of the area, in the boom from the 1970s to the present, and traces this development and related conceptions historically, into polar history and the period of romanticism in the 1800s and earlier.
