Mr Johnston's Annotated Catalogue of African Grasshoppers (Cambridge, 1956) presented a complete list of all species recorded from Africa up to the end of 1953. A bibliography of almost 1000 titles was used and summaries after each species gave full references to published descriptions, synonyms, figures and data on distribution, ecology, habits and economic importance.
