A time series is a sequence of observations, usually ordered in time. In some cases, the ordering may be according to another dimension. The feature of time series analysis is the explicit recognition of the importance of the order in which the observations are made. The material covered in this book comes from the author's many years of teaching experience and is based on applications and exercises. Some of the problems cover general theory, and the exercises are designed to familiarize the reader with complicated proofs.

This important volume examines the phenomena of cognition from an adaptive perspective. Rather than adhering to the typical practice in cognitive psychology of trying to predict behavior from a model of cognitive mechanisms, this book develops a number of models that successfully predict behavior from the structure of the environment to which cognition is adapted. The methodology -- called rational analysis -- involves specifying the information-processing goals of the system, the structure of the environment, and the computational constraints on the system, allowing predictions about...

Related to the earlier ACT production systems theory, this book's goal is to present evidence for the psychological reality of a production system model of mind. The text uses the analyses of Anderson to extend the scope of that theory. The accompanying disk us for use with LISP 2.0 on a Mac II.

Now available in paper, The Architecture of Cognition is a classic work that remains relevant to theory and research in cognitive science. The new version of Anderson's theory of cognitive architecture -- Adaptive Control of Thought (ACT*) -- is a theory of the basic principles of operation built into the cognitive system and is the main focus of the book.

Twenty-five years ago, the HAM theory of human memory was published. This theory reflected one of a number of then-current efforts to create a theory of human cognition that met with the twin goals of precision and complexity. Up until then the standard for precision took the form of precise models of specific experiments along with some informal, verbally-stated understanding of how they could be extended to new experiments. They seemed to fall far short of capturing the breadth and power of human cognition that was being demonstrated by the new experimental work in human cognition. The next...

This book presents the newest evolution of Anderson's ACT theory, replete with applications to areas as analogical learning, action, choice, and cognitive arithmetic. For all cognitive scientists and advanced educational researchers.

This book is based on the belief that decision making is perhaps the most critical of all teaching skills and that good assessments lie at the core of good decision making. To become better teachers then, teachers must learn to make informed decisions about both individual students (learning decisions) and about groups of students (teaching decisions). This book gives equal status to both types of decisions and shows how assessment is integral to both. The organization of the book is sequential, mirroring the way in which information should be used to make decisions. It begins with a...

This volume has as its primary aim the examination of issues concerning executive function and frontal lobe development. While many texts have addressed these issues, this is the first to do so within a specifically developmental framework. This area of cognitive function has received increasing attention over the past decade, and it is now established that the frontal lobes, and associated executive functions, are critical for efficient functioning in daily life. It is also clear, and of particular relevance to this text, that these functions develop gradually through childhood, and then...

While talking heads debate the media's alleged conservative or liberal bias, award-winning journalist Bonnie Anderson knows that the problem with television news isn't about the Left versus the Right--it's all about the money. From illegal hiring practices to ethnocentric coverage to political cheerleading, News Flash exposes how American broadcast conglomerates' pursuit of the almighty dollar consistently trumps the need for fair and objective reporting. Along the way to the bottomline, the proud tradition of American television journalism has given way to an entertainment-driven...
