Big city boy grabs scholarship to escape L.A. insanity to small-town America. Meets, wins, loses ?

World explorer Tom Larson is off on another grand adventure this time with his wife and three small children! First they go to Woodstock, England while he studies for his MLitt degree at Oxford, then they are off to Johannesburg, South Africa where Larson has a teaching position at the Witwatersrand University. During vacations he goes to Botswana to continue studies of the Hambukushu people he started in 1950.

"The Great Adventure"

In 1947, after four years with the Navy in the South Pacific, Tom Larson returned to the University of California at Berkeley just in time to become a member of the University's Africa Expedition. He was to collect mammal and reptile specimens for The Museum of Vertebrate Zoology of the University.

With Professor Charles Camp, the paleontologist leader of the expedition, they explored Doris Crater in the remote Kaokoveld of Nambia. Then Tom joined Professor Edwin Loeb in Ovamboland where he filmed 115 Kung Bushmen. From there he traveled alone, hunting for specimens...

In September of 1937, Eagle Scout Tom Larson put a packsack on his back and set out to see the world. After two years at the University of Minnesota, he hitchhiked westward from his hometown of Aitkin, Minnesota. Eight months later as a seaman on a west coast oil tanker, he'd saved $250 dollars. After riding on freight cars and hitchhiking, he arrived in New York City. Luckily he was able to work passage on a Danish freighter to Antwerp, Belgium.
