Style and Ideology in Translation : Latin American Writing in English

Jeremy Munday

Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, this book investigates the style, or 'voice', of English language translations of twentieth century Latin American writing, including fiction, political speeches and film. Existing models of stylistic analysis, supported at times by computer-assisted analysis, are developed to examine a range of works and writers, selected for their literary, cultural and ideological importance. The style of the different translators is subjected to a close linguistic investigation within their cultural and ideological framework.

Retranslation: Translation, Literature and Reinterpretation

Sharon Deane-Cox Jeremy, Etc Munday

Retranslation is a phenomenon which gives rise to multiple translations of a particular work. But theoretical engagement with the motivations and outcomes of retranslation often falls short of acknowledging the complex nature of this repetitive process, and reasoning has so far been limited to considerations of progress, updating and challenge; there is even less in the way of empirical study.

This book seeks to redress the balance through its case studies on the initial translations and retranslations of Flaubert's Madame Bovary and Sand's pastoral tale La Mare au...

Evaluation in Translation : Critical points of translator decision-making

Jeremy Munday

In this book, Jeremy Munday presents advances towards a general theory of evaluation in translator decision-making that will be of high importance to translator and interpreter training and to descriptive translation analysis. By evaluation the author refers to how a translator 's subjective stance manifests itself linguistically in a text.

In a world where translation and interpreting function as a prism through which opposing personal and political views enter a target culture, it is crucial to investigate how such views are processed and sometimes subjectively altered by the...

Corpus-Based Translation Studies: Research and Applications

Kruger, Alet

This is a collection of leading research within corpus-based translation studies (CTS). CTS is now recognized as a major paradigm that has transformed analysis within the discipline of translation studies. It can be defined as the use of corpus linguistic technologies to inform and elucidate the translation process, something that is increasingly accessible through advances in computer technology.

The book pulls together a wide range of perspectives from respected authors in the field. All the chapters deal with the implementation of the basic concepts and methodologies, providing...

Translating the Poetry of the Holocaust: Translation, Style and the Reader Boase-Beier, Jean 9781441139528 Bloomsbury Academic
Translating the Poetry of the Holocaust: Translation, Style and the Reader

Boase-Beier, Jean

Taking a cognitive approach, this book asks what poetry, and in particular Holocaust poetry, does to the reader - and to what extent the translation of this poetry can have the same effects. It is informed by current theoretical discussion and features many practical examples.

Holocaust poetry differs from other genres of writing about the Holocaust in that it is not so much concerned to document facts as to document feelings and the sense of an experience. It shares the potential of all poetry to have profound effects on the thoughts and feelings of the reader.

Translating for Singing: The Theory, Art and Craft of Translating Lyrics Apter, Ronnie 9781472571885 Bloomsbury Academic
Translating for Singing: The Theory, Art and Craft of Translating Lyrics

Apter, Ronnie

Translating for Singing discusses the art and craft of translating singable lyrics, a topic of interest in a wide range of fields, including translation, music, creative writing, cultural studies, performance studies, and semiotics. Previously, such translation has most often been discussed by music critics, many of whom had neither training nor experience in this area. Written by two internationally known translators, the book focusses mainly on practical techniques for creating translations meant to be sung to pre-existing music, with suggested solutions to such linguistic...

Community Translation

Mustapha Taibi Uldis Ozolins Jeremy, Etc Munday

Investigating an important field within translation studies, Community Translation addresses the specific context, characteristics and needs of translation in and for communities. Traditional classifications in the fields of discourse and genre are of limited use to the field of translation studies, as they overlook the social functions of translation. Instead, this book argues for a classification that cuts across traditional lines, based on the social dimensions of translation and the relationships between text producers and audiences.
