In the summer of 2001, teachers came from the urban and suburban areas of the greater Detroit area to share their vast knowledge and experience in the Language Arts. As part of the Meadow Brook Writing Project, elementary, middle school, high school and college level educators became authors.

In the summer of 2003, teachers from the greater Detroit area came together to share their knowledge, experience, and creative expression in Language Arts and instruction, with an emphasis on writing, as fellows of the Meadow Brook Writing Project. "In the Company of Writers 2003" is the anthology resulting from that collaboration. All participants, from elementary through college, returned to their classrooms in the fall, inspired and ready to pass that inspiration on to their students.

For a month in the summer of 2004, a select group of teachers from the greater Detroit area of Southeastern Michigan assembled on the campus of Oakland University in Pawley Hall. There they bonded through the sharing of personal and professional writings. The diverse group of two dozen educators took the risk of becoming students once again so as to become more assured teachers.
